Why did I open my phone?

Privacy policy

Updated September 9, 2026 · App version 2.0

Confusion Studios LLC makes Why did I open my phone? This policy explains how the app handles your recordings, text, and other information.

In brief: speech is transcribed on your device and notes are saved there. Optional cloud cleanup sends transcript text, not audio, for processing. Cloud cleanup starts enabled; you can switch it off before recording.

Speech stays on your device

The app uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition to turn your speech into text on your iPhone or iPad. The app does not upload your recordings for transcription or cloud cleanup. Supported language models may need to be downloaded from Apple.

Audio files are used locally while recording and processing, including retries if something fails. The app removes these temporary files after a note is saved or the recording is discarded. They are not a saved audio library.

Cloud cleanup is optional

Cloud cleanup sends a note’s transcript to OpenAI through AIProxy. It corrects dictation mistakes, extracts useful pieces you can copy, and suggests whether the note should be protected from purging. Anything you dictate into that transcript, including personal information, is included in the text sent for processing. The recording itself is not sent.

Cloud cleanup is enabled by default. Switch the recording screen from “Cleaned up in the cloud” to “Nothing leaves this phone” to stop automatic cloud cleanup. That choice is saved for future use. You can still choose to revise and look for pieces on an individual note; doing so sends that note’s text for cloud processing.

Cloud requests also involve technical information needed to provide and secure the service, such as your IP address, request metadata, and device-verification information. AIProxy’s published policy describes retention of IP addresses, request metadata, response status codes, and error response bodies for 30 days. See AIProxy’s privacy policy.

OpenAI processes the submitted text under its API data policies, which include retention for service operation and abuse monitoring. Cloud processing is not a promise of zero retention or immediate deletion. See OpenAI’s API data controls.

Your saved notes

The app stores notes and extracted pieces on your device, along with information such as their date, duration, language, and protection status. When cleanup fixes a transcript, the original is also kept so you can switch between versions. Your preferences are stored locally.

Notes remain until you delete them. You can unprotect notes and use Purge Unprotected to remove them, with a brief opportunity to undo. Protecting a note keeps it out of that purge; it does not prevent cloud processing when you request cleanup.

Device backups may contain app data, depending on your Apple or computer backup settings. Deleting a note in the app does not remove copies from existing backups, other apps, or cloud providers’ retained processing logs.

Copying and access to history

A finished transcript is automatically copied to the system clipboard. A corrected version may replace that copy if the clipboard still contains the original. Tapping a note or piece to copy it, or switching between fixed and original text, also places text on the clipboard. Pasting and Apple’s Universal Clipboard can make that text available outside this app, according to your device settings.

Access to saved-note history uses the device’s authentication, such as Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode. The app receives the authentication result, not your biometric data or passcode. This history lock does not protect text you have already copied elsewhere.

Permissions and support

The app needs microphone access to record. You can manage permissions in your device’s Settings. No app account is required.

If you contact support, we receive the information you send, including your email address and message, and use it to respond and resolve your request. Please share only the note content needed to explain the problem.

Your choices and questions

You can disable automatic cloud cleanup, delete saved notes, and control device permissions and backups. For questions about personal information processed through our services, or to request access, correction, or deletion where applicable, contact support@confusionstudios.com. We cannot retrieve notes that exist only on your device.
